Prempeh-The best High School in Ghana!
By Yaw Boateng
Growing up in Ghana in the seventies, there was always this argument about the best High School in the whole country. There were and still are famous schools like ACHIMOTA SCHOOL and MFANTIPIM SCHOOL. But as far as I am concerned, the best High School (we call it Secondary School in Ghana) at least in the 70's was PREMPEH COLLEGE in Kumasi. Even though it is called Prempeh College, it is really a High School. How do I come to the conclusion that Prempeh College, my alma mater, was the top high school in Ghana in the 1970's (and probably at this time too)? Academic achievement. The number of students that go on from that high school into the universities. Here is a great example. In the seventies, Ghana had only one Medical School. Only sixty students were admitted every year and the competition was very fierce. Imagine all the thousands of Science Students across Ghana wanting to be doctors. For those who are not familiar Ghana used to follow the British system- five years of High School leading to "O" (ordinary)level certificate and two years of "Sixth Form" (a kind of Junior College) leading to "A" (advanced) level certificate. Then on to university. In Ghana almost all Science students aspire to do one of the following- doctor. engineer, pharmacist. But the most competitive is going to medical school. n multiple years Prempeh College supplied several candidates to the only medical school. But in one particular year ten out of the sixty students admitted to the medical school came from Prempeh College. Wow! One high school accounted for one-sixth of all medical school entrants in a year. That was impressive. And that is why my alma mater, Prempeh College, was the best high school in Ghana in the 1970's. Those are the plain facts. Sorry Mfantsipim and Achimota! |
